Dixon Police Department Launches Post-Thanksgiving Bait Package Operations to Deter Porch Pirates

With Thanksgiving leftovers officially transitioning into sandwiches and soups, the Dixon Police Department is stepping into its annual effort to stop porch pirates before they make off with your holiday deliveries. As online shopping surges and packages start appearing on doorsteps across the city, our Bait Package Program is now fully active.

Each year, the days right after Thanksgiving mark the unofficial kickoff to the busiest delivery season of the year. Unfortunately, it’s also a favorite time for thieves looking to turn your holiday orders into their own early presents. To stay ahead of them, Dixon officers are deploying GPS-equipped bait packages throughout town and keeping an eye out for suspicious activity.

Chief Robert Thompson shared, “We’ve been running this program for years, and every season we stay committed to deterring package theft. As deliveries pick up, so do our efforts to protect our community.”

How Residents Can Help Protect Their Packages

• Track packages and bring them inside as soon as possible.
 • Give carriers delivery instructions to place items out of view from the street.
 • Use secure delivery options, lockboxes, or retailer pickup points when available.
 • Ask a trusted neighbor to grab your package if you’re out.
 • Keep porches tidy, making it easier to spot anything out of place.
 • Use doorbell or exterior cameras, which can help deter thieves.

Volunteer Opportunities Still Open

Residents who want to participate in the program can email porchpirates@dixonpoliceca.gov to volunteer their address as a possible bait-package location. Selected homes will receive simple instructions, and volunteers are asked to keep program details confidential to maintain its effectiveness.

As we move deeper into the holiday season, we appreciate the community’s partnership in keeping Dixon safe. Together, we can make sure the only thing getting delivered this year is cheer — not opportunities for porch pirates.
